What happens when the story you traveled to cover is suddenly canceled? That was the question I had to answer while en route to Lusaka, Zambia, for UNESCO’s World Press Freedom Day and RightsCon 2026. My latest article for the Global Investigative Journalism Network looks at the sudden cancellation of RightsCon and what journalists can learn from reporting inside uncertainty. A cancellation is not just a logistical problem. It can become evidence. It can reveal who has power, who disappears from the room, who is left without information, and what kinds of speech become risky before violence ever occurs.
